Anesthesia

Anesthesia is a state of unconsciousness, achieved with drugs and special techniques used by licensed anesthesiologists.

The term anesthesia was mentioned for the first time by the Greek philosopher Dioskourides in the 1st century BC. In 1846, Oliver Wendel Holmes used the term to denote “a state of hypnosis in which a surgical procedure is performed without pain.”

Anesthesia aims to:

  • safeguard and preserve life;
  • ease patient surgery-related pain and stress;
  • ensure proper conditions for the procedure.

Anesthesiology has made significant advancements in the field of Medicine today, and its role has grown considerably. As a result of the introduction of new, safer medications into anesthetic practice as well as the use of more advanced tools and technology, anesthesia is now safer and results in fewer unfavorable surgical outcomes. During the procedure, the anesthesiologist is constantly and uninterruptedly next to the patient to monitor their status with the help of dedicated equipment (monitoring).

On a daily basis, thousands of procedures are performed, requiring different types of anesthesia. Waiting to undergo a planned surgical procedure may cause anxiety and raise concerns to the patient and their close family members. Any such concern must be addressed by the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist.
